The discovery of payable gold at Ophir in 1851 generated the first gold rush in Australia, generating a hive of activity in the region in a growth in the population. Minerals such as copper was discovered in Molong and Cadia. Gold discoveries around the region saw the establishment of many towns and infrastructure.
